Healthy Sweet Potato Fries

French fries? Who doesn’t crave them? This is the perfect side dish for any barbecue, especially now in summer, when people are cooking out often.

There are few options to enjoy French fries without the worry of high fat and calories:

1. Buy the regular frozen one or-sweet potato- frozen french fries at the store and bake it in the oven.

2.  Or the healthiest alternative-make your own sweet potato fries.

People may think, buying frozen  sweet potato fries instead of the regular fries, it will be healthier, but let me give you just one example.

The popular Frozen Food Brand “AlexiaFoods”. You can find their products at the healthy food stores, or at the organic freezer section at the grocery store. They claim to be a company that uses natural ingredients  and cares about their customers’ health.

Their popular  Sweet Potato French Fries with the Sea salt  has the following ingredients: Sweet Potatoes, Canola Oil and/or Sunflower Oil and/or Safflower Oil, Rice Flour, Tapioca Starch, Natural Cane Sugar, Cornstarch, Tapioca Dextrin, Sea Salt, Chili Pepper Powder, Salad Mustard (Distilled Vinegar, Mustard Seed, Salt, Turmeric, Paprika), Xanthan Gum, Gluconic Acid.

Really? Why does the sweet potato need extra sugar if it is sweet? There are few ingredients that are 80% positive GMOs: Canola Oil, Cornstarch, Safflower oil.  What about the other ingredients? Do you ever use Rice Flour or Gluconic Acid for making fries at home? All the packaged food are loaded with sodium that prevents it from going bad and stay fresh for longer.

I know, it is so much easier just grab the package from the freezer and make your fries in 15 minutes, but check  the ingredients first. Do you recognise them? Think about your health. Spend 10 more minutes in the kitchen and make the healthy delicious food that everybody will enjoy.

The recipe I am sharing today is healthy, easy to make and needs just A FEW ingredients.

Sweet Potato Fries.

2 sweet potatoes

1,5 tbs. coconut oil

1tbs. chili powder( optional)

1/2 tsp. garlic powder

sea salt, to taste

2 tsp. arrowroot starch( the healthy option for any kind of starch)

The coating of arrowroot( a large perennial herb found in rain forest habitats) helps them brown and crispy in theoven without all the deep-frying nonsense.

Preheat the oven to 420F and lightly grease a baking sheet with the coconut oil or you can use parchment paper.

Cut the sweet potato into thin French fries. If you make them too thick, their texture will be soggy.

In a large bowl, combine the sweet potatoes, coconut oil, chili powder and garlic powder. Use your hands to evenly coat the potatoes with the spices. Add sea salt to taste. Add the arrowroot and mix well again with your hands.

Bake for 25 minutes or until crispy and brown on one side. Carefully turn the fries over using a spatula, and cook for another 15-20 minutes or so, or until all are crisp on the outside and tender inside.
